A distribution event was held Wednesday to help families dealing with food insecurity.
Some students rely on school for their breakfast and lunch, but with schools closed for summer vacation, it often leaves parents in a bind financially.
Tamara Dawson, of the Campaign Against Hunger, says that her organization in Bed-Stuy typically sees around 200 families a day. However, once the summer months roll around, that number often spikes between 250-300 families a day.
In recent years, the “No Kids Hungry” program says that around one in five children in Brooklyn are food insecure.
“Students who typically would get their free lunch and free breakfast won’t have that, so we’re giving them some healthy fresh produce that can go home and make meals.”

Volunteers hope these kits will take away some of the worries about hunger this summer.
